Retained vs. contingency legal recruiting in Phoenix

A neutral employer framework for distinguishing recruiting engagement structures before starting a legal search in Phoenix.

Start with the engagement, not a label

“Retained” and “contingency” can describe different commercial structures, levels of exclusivity, payment timing and search commitments. Definitions vary by provider, so an employer should read the proposed agreement rather than assume a universal model.

Keep terms in the written agreement

This page is educational and does not make an offer of retained or contingency service. BEGHR discusses fit and commercial terms with an employer before any recruiting engagement begins.

Employer questions

Questions Phoenix employers ask before engaging a legal recruiter.

How long does a legal placement take?

BEGHR’s published placement timeframe is 23 to 35 days from the signed engagement. The role, compensation range, admission requirements and your team’s interview availability determine the actual date for a specific search.

How does milestone billing work?

Agree the role, estimated fee range, billable milestones and payment terms before the search begins. Billing starts after applicants are sent, under the agreed milestone plan, with invoices at least monthly during billable service delivery. BEGHR handles client billing and account questions.

Do we pay if the search does not result in a hire?

Milestone billing pays for agreed work as the search progresses, so completed billable milestones may be payable without a placement. Your client agreement specifies the billing triggers, amounts, due dates and any cancellation terms.

What guarantee applies to a legal placement?

A 45-day replacement guarantee applies: if the hire leaves within 45 days, BEGHR re-runs the search under the terms of the engagement. Repeat hires for the same role are 50% off. Confirm conditions and exclusions in your agreement.

Does BEGHR verify bar admission?

No. The employer verifies admission, good standing and any discipline through the State Bar of Arizona and, for court-facing roles, the Maricopa County Superior Court. BEGHR confirms what the candidate reports and flags gaps, but the official record is the only authority.
